Overview of Scientists in School
Scientists in School is a dynamic national charity dedicated to inspiring a love of STEM and environmental awareness in children and youth. Since 1989, we have been a crucial partner in elementary STEM education, delivering investigative English and French workshops that spark curiosity and foster youth interest, confidence and STEM skills.
Over 36 years, over 11.5 million children and youth have experienced our immersive workshops, where they became scientists in school. We’re focused on developing the bright minds and innovators needed for Canada’s economic and social prosperity. We do this through high-calibre, fun, hands-on classroom and community setting workshops, led by passionate and skilled STEM role models.
From its inception through 2019, Scientists in School delivered its hands-on STEM workshops exclusively through onsite visits led by our expert presenters. At that time, our reach was focused primarily in southern Ontario and southern Alberta.
In 2020, sparked by the pandemic, we launched an innovative online workshop model that stayed true to the elements proven to create measurable impact for our youth STEM outcomes—children becoming scientists and engineers under the guidance of visiting experts. To preserve the richness of our investigative approach, we ship topic-curated materials in advance so every child can participate in a fulsome way.
Today, with over 30 curriculum-aligned topics for Kindergarten to Grade 8, and 8 community topics, this innovation has fueled meaningful expansion beyond Ontario and Alberta into every province and territory.
Last year, our visiting scientists engaged over 330,000 children and youth in more than 14,000 workshops across Canada. We place a strong emphasis on increasing participation among marginalized youth, particularly those in low-income, rural, and northern communities. Currently, schools and community organizations in 600 communities across every province and territory are involved, with 49% of participants coming from communities that face significant barriers.
Post-workshop teacher surveys consistently have high return rates, and very high scores for our program’s effectiveness for our key youth outcomes across both online and onsite workshop models.
Our main goals for youth in STEM, whether they take part in one or several workshops during their elementary school years, are to help them become more interested in STEM, feel more confident about it, and understand how STEM relates both to their daily lives and to many exciting career options.
