STEM Programming from Coast to Coast to Coast

Our Director of National Outreach, Erin Westman, spoke about our work to CBC radio Yukon, highlighting how we get our hands-on exploratory workshops into classrooms across Canada. You can listen to the interview segment here!

We love sharing the impact of our programming. Today, we’re sharing more about how our online workshops foster a lasting curiosity for STEM by providing a real-time connection to a scientist anywhere in Canada.

What does a Scientists in School online workshop look like?

Our exploratory online workshops pair a teacher and their class with a STEM expert presenter. Our presenters are people who have careers or backgrounds in science, technology, engineering, or math.

The STEM expert presenter spends an hour remotely connected to the class and guides the young learners through 3-4 discovery-based investigations. Participants in our online workshops are outfitted with the materials needed to explore, and to take home. The students aren’t just sitting and watching a screen – they are actively participating in discovering STEM principles!

We offer over 30 different workshop topics across Canada tailored to fit seamlessly into the local grade and curriculum.

Frequently Asked Question: What is Scientists in School? (click here to expand)

We’re a Canadian science outreach charity dedicated to sparking children’s interest in STEM through hands-on discovery. Here’s what some of those key words mean to us:

Science outreach: we go where the young learners are! We’re delivering workshops in every province and territory – we can be anywhere there’s an internet connection.

Dedication to sparking children’s interest: at the heart of our workshops is a wonder for STEM concepts. We don’t just want to introduce the principles of STEM, we strive to make them accessible and fun. We see it every day: when a child has fun with STEM, they are more open to engaging in STEM learning in the future!

Hands-on discovery: there’s nothing better than STEM you can feel, manipulate, see, and even smell! A full sensory experience is proven to aid in lesson retention, and we think it goes beyond learning and into understanding, prompting future curiosity.

“What a fantastic way to kick off the Grade 6 Exploring Space unit of study! My students were so engaged with every activity the presenter provided and are very keen to continue learning about this topic. The fact that our small rural school can host a workshop like this online is truly rewarding.” – Grade 6/7 teacher in rural Saskatchewan after an “Our Place in Space” workshop

Partnering with Connected North

We are thrilled to be a Content Provider on the Connected North platform, reaching remote and northern communities in Canada.

Connected North provides live, interactive virtual learning experiences and access to educational resources for students and teachers in remote communities, supporting them where they live. Through the program, students from Kindergarten – Grade 12 are offered unique opportunities to thrive. We’re proud to be a partner on the platform, connecting STEM experts with more remote and northern students than ever before.

Northern Attitude: powerful feedback from northern teachers

Scientists in School is strengthened by the feedback we get from teachers and workshop hosts everywhere. We actively dig into the areas for improvement to ensure our STEM enrichment gets better every day, and we are encouraged by the positive feedback and testimonials we receive.

“The kids really loved the workshop and were visibly excited to follow throughout. They even commented at the end that it was the best Connected North workshop they had ever had.” – Grade 8 teacher in Kugluktuk, Nunavut after a Go with the Flow! workshop delivered through Connected North

Our online programming is a key part of our ongoing mission to reach every young learner in Canada with high-quality STEM enrichment. We are proud to be nurturing young scientists everywhere with our workshops full of scientific discovery.
