“This year’s Science Literacy Week theme is From Sea to Space. Spanning the vastness of our oceans to the outer edges of our atmosphere, this national campaign invites Canadians of all ages to discover how science shapes our world.” – Canadian Association of Science Centres
At Scientists in School, we are continuously seeking out incredible scientists who are excited to share how their work shapes the world. Meet four such scientists who all have one thing in common: a passion for the science of space! Plus, explore resources from across the web for learners of all ages.
Astronomy and Astrophysics: Observing the Universe
Dr. Laurie Rousseau-Nepton is a Canadian astronomer at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and the first Indigenous woman in Canada to obtain a PhD in astrophysics! Our stellar conversation includes a dialogue on Indigenizing STEM in classrooms, encouraging girls to pursue STEM, and creating a space in science that is open and inclusive of different perspectives and voices.
What makes a star a star? How do you hunt planets? Why is Pluto no longer considered a planet? Learn all these answers and more in our conversation with Dr. Parshati Patel. Dr. Patel is an astrophysicist and science communicator, and she shares her passion for stars, galaxies, and space in our out of this world conversation.
STEM Experts at the Canadian Space Agency
Tim Haltigin is the Senior Mission Scientist in Planetary Exploration at the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). Tim is leading Canada’s efforts in exploring the solar system and inspiring the next generation of planetary scientists.
Tim shares his exciting adventures of chasing asteroids or cosmic time capsules in space. He was an integral part of the exciting OSIRIS-REx mission, a NASA-led mission that is collecting a sample from Bennu, an orbiting carbonaceous near-Earth asteroid. How do you chase an asteroid in space? How do you collect a sample? What mysteries will this mission unlock? Tim answers all these questions and more in this insightful interview.
Kumudu Jinadasa is a Project Engineer and Mission Manager at the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). With a background in engineering and a deep-seated curiosity about the cosmos, Kumudu now serves as a key member of CSA’s exploration team. This interview isn’t just defying gravity – it’s breaking barriers and inspiring minds! Watch this exhilarating conversation about moon exploration, space careers, and the incredible impact of women and girls in engineering.
