When you’re looking out for STEM in your daily life and you know science, technology, engineering, and math are everywhere, it can be hard to narrow down what you’re looking for and where. Here are a few places where you can find STEM information that may surprise you.
A special thanks to young scientist Danielle for sharing her findings which inspired this article. STEM is everywhere!
On a Cruise Ship

The ocean is a great place to find plants and animals with amazing traits, and even more hydrology and geology too. So, if you’re headed to vacation on a very large boat, you might find STEM education on board. Many cruises are incorporating the sciences of the seas into their onboard offerings of activities, everywhere from the sunny equator to the icy Antarctic circle.
In Historic Downtowns
Anywhere with a plaque is a possibility for STEM information – sometimes you’ll get more history or sociology, but architecture and engineering details are commonly found in or on historic buildings. If you live somewhere with a long history, getting out for a walk or roll is a great way to stumble upon STEM.
At Garden Centers & Botanical Gardens
Did you know that gardeners and scientists alike are out there developing new kinds of plants all the time? The next time you’re at a garden center or botanical gardens, look for the scientific information on the labels for the plants. A scientific name can lead you to information about where that plant variety was discovered or made.

One staff member here at Scientists in School said, “In my garden this season I’m growing a type of strawberry that was developed at a university near me. I found it at my local plant nursery and I was intrigued so I’m giving it a try. I’m excited to taste the fruit!”
Throughout Conservation Areas & Wildlife Rehab Facilities
These areas aren’t just full of wildlife, they often have education centers or informational signage placed throughout to enrich your experience and share a little science along the way. Taking a trip through a wildlife sanctuary or conservation area is a great way to get to know the flora and fauna of the area, and what’s being done to preserve the habitat.
STEM is Everywhere
Just keep your eyes peeled and your mind open and you might find new science, technology, engineering, and math learnings anywhere you go!
