Last spring, a class of third graders completed the Get the Dirt on Plants workshop. Their scientist presenter left them with a new understanding of how plants grow and some corn kernels…
Curiosity Takes Root
Sometimes workshop materials take on new life, literally!

After their session, the class had a handful of corn kernels and an idea: what if they planted them? They germinated the kernels themselves and planted the burgeoning sprouts in the school garden when they were big enough to go outside. With that, they went on summer break.
When they came back in the fall, they were surprised to find towering corn stalks where their little plants once were.
Their teacher shared, “Our corn grew into giant plants! Not only that but they had produced new cobs of corn. We decided to pick the cobs once they were big enough and figure out how to use them in the classroom. The result was home-grown popcorn!”

Helping Young Scientists Grow
Every Scientists in School workshop is a seed for future learning, long after the STEM expert has left the classroom. We support every teacher after their session with additional resources to help answer questions and further their classroom’s discovery of the workshop topic.

We love to hear stories like this one from the amazing teachers we are proud to partner with. The third-grade teacher left us with this lovely note, “We really appreciate this fun project you got us started on.”
